The Port of Valencia, Spain, recently announced a private 5G deployment project to connect more than 25,000 devices on site.

The project covers a 6 km2 site with a private 5G network using the n40 frequency band (2.3G to 2.4GHz). This communication network features a geographically redundant configuration and a unique cyber security system that will connect devices such as tablets, vehicles, cameras, sensors, and drones used in the port, as well as various applications and services.

The Port of Valencia is the second busiest port in the Mediterranean after the Port of Tangier (Morocco), handling approximately 77 million tons of cargo and 4.8 million TEUs (container handling units) annually. With the introduction of private 5G, the port aims to transform itself into a smart port (or Port 4.0) benchmark by improving efficiency, safety, and connectivity.

The immediate use cases for private 5G are expected to include improved and enhanced security around ports and surveillance inside ports, and remote maintenance. In the future, 5G coverage for passengers, digital twin, collision risk detection, and loading planning are also being considered.
