On December 31, 2024, Samsung announced its latest efforts to integrate AI technology into its radio access network (RAN).

According to the announcement, the company is "accelerating its readiness for the future of communications by integrating AI technology throughout the RAN, from the radio unit to the digital unit to system operations. This is due to the recent situation in the telecommunications market, where sustainability is becoming more important, not only in terms of data transmission speeds, but also in terms of user experience and energy efficiency, according to the company.

The company also revealed that it demonstrated its AI-RAN technology with industry partners during the Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit in November 2024. The demonstration showcased features that improve base station data throughput, communication coverage, and energy efficiency. Specifically, AI technology was used to improve the performance of technology for estimating the state of the radio channel for data transmission between base stations and cell phones, resulting in significant improvements in both downlink data throughput from base stations to cell phones and uplink data throughput from cell phones to base stations. The company has also shown improved energy efficiency by using power more efficiently according to the strength of the signal being transmitted.

Charlie Zhang, senior vice president of Samsung Research America (SRA), said, "We thank our partners for their collaboration on these groundbreaking AI radio innovations," and added, "We will continue to work with our ecosystem partners to realize AI-RAN We will continue to lead the innovation."
