As for the proprietary 5G modem that Apple is reportedly developing, Bloomberg is reporting that sources say that the first generation model will not support millimeter wave, but that its second generation model is expected to support millimeter wave. The article is written by Mark Gurman, an Apple insider, and several media outlets have picked it up as highly reliable information.
According to these reports, Apple is expected to include a second-generation in-house 5G modem in the latest iPhone 18 series and iPad Pro models scheduled for release in 2026-2027. In addition to millimeter wave support, the modem will support download speeds of up to 6 Gbps, 6-carrier aggregation with Sub6 5G, and 8-carrier aggregation when using millimeter waves.
Gurman also expects Apple to release its own third-generation 5G modem in 2027. The company is aiming to surpass Qualcomm modems in terms of performance and AI capabilities for this modem, and is also considering integrating it with the iPhone's A-series chips.
Apple's 5G modem was previously reported to be the first model in the iPhone SE (4th generation) and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Slim/Air (tentative name), which will be released in 2025.
