O2 Telefonica (Telefonica Germany) and AWS announced on November 28, 2024 that they are piloting the integration of quantum technology into O2 Telefonica's mobile network to improve performance and explore new data security standards. They said this is the world's first attempt to test multiple quantum technologies in a cloud environment.
The project is a collaboration between O2 Telefónica, Telefónica SA, AWS, Telefónica Tech, and the Technical University of Madrid. They plan to calculate the optimal placement of mobile towers and study ways to protect the network with quantum cryptography, with the aim of using these findings to develop future 6G technology.
In May of this year, O2 Telefónica announced plans to migrate approximately 1 million 5G customers to the AWS cloud. It also revealed a roadmap to migrate 3 to 4 million customers to AWS in the next 12 to 18 months.
Matt Rehder, VP of Core Networking at AWS, said, "Quantum technology has the potential to transform communications networks, enhance security, optimize infrastructure, and unlock new capabilities," adding, "We are working closely with telecom operators such as O2 Telefonica and leading academic institutions We are working closely with telecom operators like O2 Telefonica and leading academic institutions to turn cutting-edge research into practical solutions."
