Ericsson of Sweden announced on October 8 that it has partnered with Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands to explore use cases for a state-of-the-art local 5G network. The partnership is part of the airport's broader plans for digital transformation. The goal is to make the airport future-ready with a state-of-the-art digital infrastructure for next-generation services.
Schiphol Airport has already secured a dedicated frequency band for local 5G from the local telecommunications authority. This enables full control over the communication system, optimizing performance, improving reliability, and enhancing security. Local 5G will reduce reliance on public and shared networks and enable the deployment of advanced, customized solutions.
The two companies plan to explore innovative 5G applications such as IoT-based monitoring, real-time safety systems, and predictive maintenance.
Manish Tiwari, Head of Enterprise Wireless Solutions, Private Cellular Networks at Ericsson, commented, "This pioneering project addresses the aging of the entire airport infrastructure worldwide, and we are proud to partner with Schiphol Airport. commented.
