The Taiwanese trade newspaper Digitimes reports a story about Apple's proprietary 5G modem, which is reportedly under development by Apple, and that the first version of the modem will not support millimeter wave. Apple is expected to start using its own 5G modem next year, but it may continue to rely on existing supplier Qualcomm's chips for millimeter wave-capable models such as the iPhone for the US.
Since 2018, Apple has focused on in-house production of 5G modems for the iPhone in order to break away from its dependence on Qualcomm; in 2019, the company acquired a large part of Intel's smartphone modem business, and in 2021, it was reported that it was in talks with Taiwan's TSMC to produce modems The company had been in talks with Taiwan's TSMC for modem production in 2021. However, it was revealed last year that the company would extend its 5G modem supply contract with Qualcomm until 2026, which would delay modem development.
In July of this year, renowned analyst Minqi Kuo posted that Apple's 5G modem will be used for the iPhone SE (4th generation) and the ultra-thin iPhone 17, which will be released in 2025. The former is expected to be released in the first half of 2025 and the latter in the second half of the same year, and shipments of Apple 5G modems are expected to exceed 100 million units by 2026.
