Finland's Nokia announced on September 20 a "sustainability calculator" for companies to estimate the environmental and social benefits of self-owned wireless networks (private LTE/local 5G) and Industry 4.0 applications that utilize them. The tool was developed by the company in collaboration with PwC's UK division and is intended for use by companies in the mining, manufacturing, and port industries.
The new tool quantifies the environmental and social impact of industrial use cases enabled by private wireless networks. The new tool is based on PwC's Total Impact Measurement & Management (TIMM) methodology and Nokia's data and expertise in providing self-owned wireless networks to more than 760 customers worldwide.
Nokia describes the benefits of the tool as "providing important insights and insights to improve business, including improved operational efficiency and reductions in costs and carbon and occupational accidents. The company also noted the aspect of meeting investor demand for greater transparency in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance.
Subho Mukherjee, the company's VP of Sustainability, commented that "the new tool shows that Nokia's self-owned wireless network can support greener businesses," and that it is "a strong step toward quantifying Nokia's belief in no green without digital.
