Ericsson of Sweden and Turkish telecommunications giant Turkcell announced on August 16 the successful trial deployment of Ericsson's 5G Cloud RAN technology in Turkcell's network. The trial is one of the world's first deployments of the technology and will support Turkcell's strategy to transition to open RAN.
Ericsson's Cloud RAN is a cloud-native solution that virtualizes RAN functions and decouples hardware and software. For this trial, Ericsson provided hardware and software, and conducted demonstrations, test cases, and performance evaluations.
Turkcell aims to incorporate an open RAN approach into its service management and orchestration (SMO) framework by introducing new software capabilities through the adoption of cloud RAN technology.
Vehbi Cagri Gungor, Chief Network Technology and Officer at Turkcell, said, "This trial is one of the first cases in the world that will help us strengthen our strategy to move our network operations to the cloud," and is "another step forward in our technology leadership." . Meanwhile, Isil Yalcin, Ericsson's Vice President for the Middle East and Africa, commented, "This trial demonstrates the potential of the technology to deploy, manage, and upgrade Turkcell's network in a more dynamic way.
