Vodafone Czech Republic recently deployed a 5G Mobile Private Network (MPN) at the Temelin Nuclear Power Plant operated by Czech National Power (CEZ). This private 5G network will cover the power plant's outdoor space and some indoor areas. It will be the first private 5G pilot project at a nuclear power plant in Europe.
According to Vodafone, this private 5G "paves the way for AR glasses to support the work of technicians. The transceiver communications that have been used in power plants will no longer be necessary, he said.
The company's CEO Violeta Luca said, "Our private 5G solution, which is completely independent of public networks, ensures that all user data and infrastructure are securely managed within the power plant's own systems," adding, "This technology is essential for the secure digitization of such critical infrastructure. It is essential to promote the digitization of these critical infrastructures."
In 2022, Vodafone installed a private 5G network in one of the country's largest car factories, operated by Czech company Skoda Auto. The project was to improve the quality of communication between robots, machines, and sensors in the plant, as well as automatic parking. This pilot project is a follow-up to this one, and based on the results and the evaluation by CEZ, the company will consider further 5G MPN deployment.
