The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications recently announced the launch of a working group to promote 6G telecommunications technology. The purpose of the group is to create a 6G roadmap for Finland while promoting cooperation and information exchange between the public, private, and academic sectors in the development of next-generation wireless networks.

The working group includes representatives from government agencies, research institutions, and the private sector. Specifically, the working group includes Finland's Ministry of Education and Culture, Ministry of Labor and Economy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Cyber Security Directorate, Nokia and local telecom giants DNA, Telia, Elisa, Aalto University, University of Helsinki, University of Oulu, University of Tampere, VTT (Finnish Technology Research Center), FiCom ( Finnish Technology Industry Association), and others. The installation will last until May 31, 2025, and will be led by Sabina Lindström of the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Finland joined the U.S.-led Joint Declaration on Principles for 6G Development in February 2024. The declaration is designed to agree on and cooperatively endorse shared principles for the research and development of 6G wireless communication systems, including open, free, global, interoperable, reliable, resilient, and secure connectivity. In addition to the United States and Finland, the 10 governments of Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and Sweden are participating.
