The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued new recommendations on the use of the terahertz frequency band on August 21. It urges the Indian government and domestic telecom operators to consider using the terahertz band for future 6G technology and related services.
In a new press release, TRAI asserted that "the government should introduce a new experimental licensing system called 'Tera Hertz Experimental Authorization (THEA)' in the 95 GHz to 3 THz frequency band. The main purpose of THEA is to promote R&D, indoor and outdoor testing, technical testing, experiments, and demonstrations in the 95 GHz to 3 THz band," he explained. He also proposed a specific permit period of "up to five years.
TRAI explained that the licensing system "will support the government's 'Make in India' initiative (the Modi administration's efforts to revive manufacturing in the country). TV Ramachandran of Broadband India Form, a local think tank, commented on the announcement, "TRAI is laying the groundwork for India to become a global powerhouse in testing and R&D, creating an environment for us to create cutting-edge technologies and services in the near future. We are creating the environment for the creation of cutting-edge technologies and services in the near future," he commented.
