UAE telecom giant du, Finland's Nokia, and Taiwan's MediaTek recently conducted a new trial of 5G-Advanced technology in Abu Dhabi. The trial successfully increased indoor coverage for premium customers while improving the uplink performance of du's 5G-Advanced network by 70%. The company says it has achieved a new milestone for 5G technology in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
5G-Advanced, also known as "5.5G" or "Beyond 5G," is a transitional technology before moving from 5G to 6G. It is said to offer a 10-fold improvement in network performance over standard 5G, energy savings, low power consumption, integration of sensing functions, and operational efficiency through AI (Artificial Intelligence)/ML (Machine Learning).
In this test, uplink speeds and coverage were significantly improved by utilizing multiple frequency bands and advanced transmission paths. The technology delivers robust connectivity and superior network efficiency, which is essential for high-demand applications such as videoconferencing, live streaming, and large data uploads.
du aims to launch 5G-Advanced services in Dubai by the end of the year. Hasan Alshemeili, the company's head of infrastructure technology planning, commented, "This trial is in line with our ongoing commitment to enhance customer connectivity as well as improve the uplink performance of our network.
