South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) recently announced the launch of the 6G Society, a new initiative aimed at strengthening technology exchange and cooperation between the 6G mobile and satellite communications industries.
MSIT emphasized that the new initiative, "The organic combination of terrestrial mobile and satellite communications is the key to achieving hyperspace communication services connecting land, sea, and air. He explained, "Through continuous cooperation between the two industries from the technology development stage, we aim to develop 6G wireless communications with ultra-connectivity, ultra-low latency, and ultra-spatial capabilities."
With the growing importance of satellite communications as an essential technology for 6G, this new organization will share standardization trends between mobile and satellite communications, and promote discussions on technology development and means of connecting related technologies.
Jae Myeong, Deputy Director of MSIT's Network Policy Bureau, commented, "It is very important for industry, academia, research, and government to work together to quickly set standards for 6G and to secure the technology for rapid commercialization," and added, "We will continue to provide opportunities for cooperation between the terrestrial mobile and satellite communication fields, listen to experts' opinions, and reflect them in our policies. We will continue to provide a forum for cooperation between the terrestrial mobile and satellite communications sectors, listen to experts' opinions, and reflect them in our policies.
In November 2023, MSIT announced a KRW 440.4 billion R&D plan for future 6G networks. The plan includes development of technologies related to wireless communications, mobile core networks, 6G wired networks, 6G systems, and 6G standardization.
