On June 12, Finland's Nokia released its 2024 Industrial Digitization Report, its latest report on the adoption of private wireless (self-owned wireless networks) by businesses. The report shows the benefits of private wireless, including improved worker safety and business sustainability, increased integration of advanced technologies, and reduced emissions.

For this report, Nokia commissioned research firm Global Data to interview 100 early adopters of private wireless in the manufacturing, transportation, and energy industries in Australia, France, Japan, the UK, and the US. The results show that many companies have scaled up from their initial plans to utilize private wireless in more use cases and locations.

The main findings from the survey are as follows

  • 45% of organizations utilize private wireless for more use cases than originally planned
  • 100% of companies have begun deploying private wireless to more locations or expanding its use to initial locations
  • 65% of responding companies reported at least a 10% improvement in worker safety and 79% reported at least a 10% reduction in emissions
  • 39% of private wireless adopters have deployed on-premise edge technology; 52% plan future deployments
  • 93% of responding companies met their ROI goals within 12 months; 23% met their ROI goals in just one month

Global Data's Gary Barton, research director for the study, said, "Private wireless technology offers clear benefits in connectivity and a great return on investment," adding, "But with the introduction of AI, new analytics tools, and edge platforms, even more is will be possible. These technologies will help companies prepare for the challenges of the future as they continue to drive industry transformation."
