Germany's Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute for Telecommunications Research (HHI) recently decided to deploy a local 5G network from IS-Wireless, a Polish startup telecom company. The company says it is part of the CampusOS project, which promotes an open 5G campus network ecosystem in Germany and other European markets.
Fraunhofer HHI is a research institute for mobile and optical communication networks and systems; the CampusOS project is co-coordinated by the institute and involves local companies such as Bosch, Siemens, Rohde & Schwarz and Deutsche Telekom. The project is also funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK).
According to IS-Wireless, the new local 5G networks will contribute to the goal of "designing high-demand 5G-based campus networks for future deployment in the German market. These networks are expected to support a variety of industrial applications, including those related to Industry 4.0, such as the coordination of AGVs (unmanned guided vehicles) and 3D mapping of storage spaces for improved internal transportation processes. They also envision use cases related to digital twin and logistics at construction sites.
