On May 8, South Korean telecom giant KT announced a partnership with Finland's Nokia for 6G research.

Through this partnership, the two companies will cooperate in the development of advanced Open RAN technology for 6G mobile communications and ultra-wideband radio access technology using 6G candidate frequency bands. They will also focus on future service discovery and infrastructure innovation that can be provided through 6G to prepare for the 6G era.

KT said, "By working with Nokia, we will ensure global leadership in the standardization and commercialization of 6G mobile communications," and Lee Jong-sik, head of the company's Network Research Center, commented, "With this partnership, we hope to lead the development of communications technology directly linked to next-generation cloud computing and AI. We hope to lead the development of next-generation cloud and AI-directed communication technologies through this partnership.

In Korea, in November 2023, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Information Technology announced a 440.4 billion won (about $50 billion) R&D plan for future 6G networks. The plan includes the development of technologies related to wireless communications, mobile core networks, 6G wired networks, 6G systems, and 6G standardization.
