3GPP, the international standardization project for wireless communication systems, finalized a new logo for the 6G specification during its April 23 meeting in Reston, Va.
The new logo can be used by handset manufacturers and service providers to indicate compliance or planned compliance with 3GPP's 6G specification. Approval by the 3GPP Organizational Partners is required for use.
3GPP is an international project established in 1998 to develop specifications for 3G, the third-generation mobile communications system, which also includes standardization for 4G and 5G. 3GPP operates as a partnership project among seven standardization bodies: the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) in Japan, the Technical Committee on Information and Communications (TTC), TTA in Korea, CCSA in China, ATIS in North America, and ETSI in Europe, It is operated as a partnership project by seven standardization organizations: the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) in Japan, the Telecommunications Technology Commission (TTC), TTA in Korea, CCSA in China, ATIS in North America, ETSI in Europe and TSDSI in India.
On December 4 of last year, the project announced plans to officially begin work on the 6G specifications. They announced that they are currently working on Release 18 (the first specification for 5G-Advanced) and will soon begin work on Release 19 (a specification focused on the underlying technologies for 5G-Advanced and 6G).
Note that the 6G logo has been in use since the 3GPP working group held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on May 8-10, 2024.
