On April 5, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) released two reports on the development and availability of 6G technology. These reports, prepared by the organization's Terahertz Industry Specification Group (ISG THs), describe more than 10 6G use cases, ranging from "remote surgery" to "real-time industrial control. They also delve into the terahertz bandwidths that could make these possible.

The first report, ETSI GR THz 001, describes use cases that can be realized or greatly benefit from the use of terahertz communications. The first report, "ETSI GR THz 001," describes use cases that can be realized or significantly benefit from the use of terahertz communications, including "remote surgery," "in-flight and on-train entertainment," "collaborative mobile robotics," "hazardous materials operations," "distance education," "fixed point-to-point wireless applications," "mobile wireless cross-haul transport," "wireless data centers," "interactive and immersive XR," "mission-critical XR," "real-time industrial control," "simultaneous imaging, mapping and localization," "industrial plant commissioning," "ultra-high throughput for indoor users," "in-device communications," and "predictive maintenance and diagnostics," including deployment scenarios and aspects such as potential requirements and related operational environment and propagation characteristics were addressed.

The second report, ETSI GR THz 002, focuses on the frequency band from 100 GHz (the so-called subterahertz band) to 10 THz. It describes the current regulatory situation and discusses existing services that have already been allocated frequency bands.

ETSI is a broad-based standardization organization covering a variety of information and communications technologies (ICT), from wireless broadcasting to data communications and security. It works in parallel with 3GPP, which specializes in technical specifications for mobile network technologies including radio access networks (RANs) and core networks.
